SEA Update

Friends!

We hope you had a great summer. The Social Environmental Alliance (SEA) is working on an exciting line-up of events this Fall in concert with other community organizations and we look forward to your participation!

1. GENERAL MEETINGS

The monthly General Membership Meeting is the highest decision-making body in the organization, directing the policy, program and activities of SEA. Anyone who agrees with our Constitution & Bylaws is welcome to join SEA upon payment of $20 annual membership dues (waived for low-income) and approval by members.

2. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE – THURSDAY OCT. 3 @ 4:30 PM

Our September general membership meeting decided to hold elections to the organizing committee at the next meeting on Thursday October 3 as per Article VI of the Constitution. Officers including a chairperson, recording secretary, membership secretary, treasurer and outreach director will be elected for a term of three (3) months. If you are interested in serving, please attend this meeting and help contribute to the administrative work of SEA.

3. RALLY TO OPPOSE HARPER GOVERNMENT’S SUPPORT FOR MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA – SUNDAY SEPT. 8 @ 2-4 PM

At the Cenotaph, Belleville and Government St., Victoria
Sunday September 8, 2-4 pm

For years various guises have been used for justifying Military Intervention:
“Human Security” (Iraq 1991)
“Humanitarian intervention”(Kosovo, 1999)
“Self Defence” (Afghanistan)
“Pre-emptive/Preventive Strike” (Iraq, 2003)
“Responsibility to Protect” (Haiti, 2004, Libya, 2011)
“Will to Intervene” (Mali, 2013), and
“Moral Imperative” (Syria)???

This rally is called to:
(1) Oppose the US military intervention in Syria, and the Harper government’s support for the US-led military intervention;
(2) Call for a ceasefire in Syria and a peace conference;
(3) Call for funding assistance for Syrian refugees and for the countries that are hosting them.

This event is being organized in co-operation with the Vancouver Eco-Socialist Group and UVic’s Environmental Studies Department and departments of Geography, Sociology and Political Science, as well as the Social Justice Studies Program.

To help promote the event, you can print off 3-5 PDF copies of the poster here and distribute them in your local cafe, on telephone poles and around your neighbourhood. A postering meet-up is scheduled for Saturday Sept 14 @ 11am, meeting at Ingredients Cafe. You can also join the event on Facebook. Immediately prior to the Sept 24 public forum, SEA members and supporters are meeting at Felicitas Pub at UVic at 5pm for a bite to eat/drink and an organizing/outreach discussion. 5. RAINBOW WARRIOR CONCERT – SUNDAY OCT. 6 @ 7PM

SEA is working with SocialCoast and Greenpeace to host the visit of Greenpeace’s flagship Rainbow Warrior to Victoria Harbour in early October. Coinciding with the PowerShift youth environmental conference, an exciting free public concert is taking place at the Ship’s Point Wharf on the Inner Harbour on the evening of Sunday Oct. 6 beginning at 7PM. The musical line-up will be announced shortly, so mark your calendars for this unique evening of live music and consciousness-raising, around the theme “Dress Code: Rainbow Warrior”! Tours of the ship are also being planned by Greenpeace during the daytime on Saturday Oct 5 and Sunday Oct 6. To help with publicity for the concert, email us at: socialenvironmentalalliance@gmail.com.

6. DAVID ROVICS CONCERT – FRIDAY DECEMBER 13th

Activist Singer/Songwriter David Rovics lives in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents. He has shared the stage with a veritable who’s who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera, and other networks. SEA is excited to bring David and his repertoire to Victoria for a seasonal concert and get-together December 13th at the Norway House. Mark your calendar, details to follow!

Are you working on other initiatives, campaigns or events in the community? Contact us at socialenvironmentalalliance@gmail.com or come out to the next General Meeting on October 3rd to discuss ways that SEA can work with you to advance our shared goals of social and ecological justice!

In solidarity,
